The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic was the brain child of Tom Mayer and his older brother Jim. Jim worked as a brakeman on the D & R G W railroad and Tom, a young bicycle enthusiast, challenged Jim to a race to Silverton. Today we honor that rivalry with a Memorial Day weekend festival of cycling events, including a Durango - Silverton road race or tour, a mountain bike race, circuit race, and more.
